Dean Forest Greenway
The Dean Forest Greenway is a project to create multi-use track to link Parkend and Lydney along a safe off road route following the Dean Forest Railway line. A collaboration between West Dean Parish Council and Lydney Town Council with support from Forestry England, Dean Forest Railway and Lydney Park Estate, this project has been in the pipeline for a very long time. It was originally part of a 1997 report that led to the creation of the Forest of Dean Family Cycle Trail.
The project aim is to create a world class traffic free Greenway from Parkend to Lydney connecting the Cycling Trails in the Forest of Dean with Lydney, its station and Lydney Harbour. It is anticipated that this route will transform access to the Forest by enabling the public to walk and cycle rather than drive along the heavily trafficked Forest Road.
The basis for this route was set out in a preliminary study prepared by Greenway and Cycleroutes in January 2020. Over the following months the Parish Council coordinated the development of this project working with Greenways as their agents.
